| | notes: This is the first (and, to date, the only) recording of this evocative and witty suite by Still, who more than thirty years after his death seems to be getting a highly favorable critical reappraisal. John Jeter (rhymes with better, not Peter) and the Fort Smith Symphony have recorded, for Naxos, all of Still's symphonies and several shorter orchestral pieces. |

| | notes: Musicologist Brian Newbould has completed the Scherzo, which Schubert left with the first eleven or so measures fully orchestrated and the rest of it (up to about the first repeat of the trio, or middle section) in a piano sketch. He submitted it exactly that way for his induction into a musical society in 1822; the man who commissioned the score hoarded it for slightly more than 40 years, and the "Unfinished" symphony did not see the light of day until 1865. This performance --- like that of the three-movement version presented in London in 1865 --- uses the big b-minor symphonic entr'acte from the "Rosamunde" incidental music as a finale, which makes sense: it's in the same key, and it's scored for the same forces. |
| 11:55 pm | ARCHIBALD JOYCE/ARR. JOHN ALTMAN: Song of Autumn (sometimes called Dream of Autumn)/ I Salonisti, (Sony.91475) |
