| | notes: The Kefallinian Suite by guitarist/composer Miliaressis (b. 1918) celebrates the island of Kefallinia (also known as Cefalonia or Kefalonia) near Ithica in the Ionian Sea. The first four movements are evocative of the atmosphere of the island and the sea; the fifth and final movement is a free paraphrase of a traditional Greek dance.
Greek-born guitarist Eleftheria Kotzia, educated in her native Greece as well as in Paris and London, was chosen to play in masterclasses conducted by the eminent Julian Bream in the late 1970s and early '80s. She won guitar competitions in Milan in 1977 and in France in 1982 before her London debut in 1985. She is especially noted for her championing of new music and of music by Greek composers. |
