11:38 pmPAUL GRAENER: Sinfonia breve, op. 96/ Northwest German Radio Philharmonie of Hanover, Werner Andreas Albert, conductor (CPO.777447) click to buy

notes: Paul Graener, who died in 1944 at age 72, rejected atonalism in favor of what might be described as a romantic modernism with a good bit of neoclassicism thrown in.  His music is marked by assured handling of musical form and solidly professional orchestration.  Graener, as a young man, worked for a decade at London's Haymarket Theatre, directing the orchestra and writing incidental music, overtures and entr'actes for plays.  Later, his music was championed by conductors like Erich Kleiber, Hermann Abendroth and Arturo Toscanini.  Toscanini, in fact, kept works by Graener in his active repertory into the 1940s-----even though Graener had become a member of the Nazi party and had become president of the Reichsmusikkammer after Wilhelm Furtwaengler (who received the honorary appointment without being asked if he wanted it or not) resigned.

The Sinfonia breve, thought to have been written about 1930, was published in 1932. Itwas not one of Graener's more successful works----but it has all the characteristics of his orchestral writing.   It met the National Socialists' demands for a more conservative musical style----but Graener's music (including an opera whose eponymous hero was J.S. Bach's eldest son Freidemann) was always retrospective in style and outlook.

Graener's embrace of the Nazi party, and the destruction of his home and all of his personal papers during the final phase of World War II, account for the nearly total neglect of his music after his death.
