| | notes: In a 1956 interview, Bruno Walter described Gustav Mahler---a significant mentor of his---as "the greatest performing musician I have ever known, bar none." Walter was 18 and Mahler 34 when the two men met, Walter having become Mahler's assistant at the Hamburg Opera in 1894. Walter learned Mahler's second or "Resurrection" Symphony at that time----just prior to its publication----and slightly more than a half-century later made one of the first stereo recordings of that monumental score. This recording of the Mahler first symphony, made about a year before Walter's death at 85 and initially released posthumously, is a performance of rare insight and sensitivity. It is his second recording of the work. |
